Recently in our department’s technical symposium Currents ‘11, we had a Guest Lecture delivered by Mr. Gopalakrishnan IAS, on the topic of “Governance”. During the course of his entertaining talk, he mentioned this quote : “The Indian Elephant and the Chinese Dragon”.
The term is self explanatory. It contrasts how a task is implemented by the us Indians and the Chinese. Akin to the progress of an elephant, the way we go about our implementation is slow yet stable, stumbling through a thousand obstacles but is finally reached. In stark contrast are the Chinese, for whom all that matters is the decision to implement something. The how’s, the if’s, the but’s are never in the equation. Guess the comparison with a dragon is validated.
Anyway the point of this post is not to debate between the Indian & Chinese systems. It was just a nice quote that I wanted to share, a quote I find real poetic.
